We look at the infrastructure components of the business. At a strategic level we look at the level of spend and value of infrastructure and whether the right infrastructure projects are being implemented. At base level we install the components for the infrastructure systems and manag troubleshooting.
Project Work
As part of the RTIO Voice and Data Communications Strategy programme of work, a project to define the Data Centre Detailed Design for Western Australia was started early in 2006. This sought to define the hosting infrastructure and facilities required to support RTIO strategic growth in the region. The project was subsequently split into two distinct pieces of work; one site-based covering computer rooms in the Pilbara and the other considering the consolidation of facilities in Perth into a single data centre.
The Perth Data Centre project was assigned to Rio Tinto IS&T in order to integrate the regional strategy with the global data centre design (North America and Europe).Change Corporation developed a business case and supporting transition plan for the consolidation of all existing Perth-based computer rooms into a single outsourced data centre facility. This encompassed planning for interim hosting capacity during the transition phase and disaster recovery.
The Rio Tinto Unified Communications project is one of the more challenging, yet rewarding projects . There was a breakdown in communications between business units within the organisation. Change Corporation played more of a mediation role, getting different people to talk the same language and setting the way forward with a successful communication strategy aligned with the business deployment options. We made recommendations to increase the engagement between business units and vendors and set an implementations timeline for Rio Tinto to follow.
